Fly Fishing — Henry's Fork
World-classThe Henry's Fork of the Snake River is one of the most famous fly fishing rivers in the world. Blue-ribbon trout waters flow just minutes from the cabin, offering exceptional dry-fly fishing for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout.
The Railroad Ranch section in Harriman State Park is catch-and-release only and legendary for large, selective rainbows. Upstream sections near Big Springs offer easier fishing. Idaho fishing license required.
Henry's Lake
Trophy troutThis 6,000-acre mountain lake at 6,472 feet is famous for trophy cutthroat-rainbow hybrid trout averaging 3-5 pounds, with fish over 10 pounds caught regularly.
Best fishing: June and September–October. Boat ramps at the state park. Rentals available. Special regulations apply. Ice fishing excellent in winter.
Yellowstone River & Tributaries
Yellowstone permitFish inside Yellowstone National Park on iconic waters like the Yellowstone River, Madison River, Firehole River, and Slough Creek.
Yellowstone fishing permit required ($18/3-day, $25/7-day, $40/season). No license needed — just the park permit. Season opens Memorial Day weekend. Catch-and-release only for native cutthroat.
Warm River & Fall River
Less crowdedThese spring-fed rivers near Ashton offer crystal-clear water and excellent fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Less crowded than the Henry's Fork.
Warm River campground is a beautiful access point. Wade fishing is productive. Water stays cool even in summer.
Boating & Floating
Rentals availableHenry's Lake and Hebgen Lake offer great motorized and non-motorized boating. Float the calm stretches of Henry's Fork by raft, canoe, or kayak.
Boat ramps at Henry's Lake State Park and Hebgen Lake. Kayak and canoe rentals available. Guided float trips on the Henry's Fork are excellent.
Swimming
SummerSwim in mountain rivers and lakes during warm summer months. The Firehole River swimming area inside Yellowstone is a unique geothermally-heated option.
Mountain water is cold! Water temps typically 50-65°F. The Firehole River in Yellowstone is warmer thanks to geothermal heating. Always check current conditions.
